What motivated you to start DJing/presenting?

DJing has been my life for over 30 years – honestly – I don’t know what else would motivate me as much! I live for my music, day and night, and DJing is my expression of who I am. It is a part of my soul.

What styles do you play?

I love a lot of different types of music (little known fact I am an opera nut!), but without question, when it comes to dance music, I could quite happily just listen to trance day and night. I know the music inside and out and it is the ONLY genre I play now.

Do you mix or scratch or both? Or are you more of a presenter?

I am a pretty good mixer you could say! I have embraced the modern technology and use it to DJ like I never could have done many years ago when the only medium available was vinyl. That said, I have been told I have rather a good radio voice so I am quite happy to present and use that to inform the listeners of what they are experiencing music wise. I am also a bit of a cheeky Cockney (well not a real Cockney as I am from South London) and I have a rather dry sense of humour – so – really in answer to this point I am comfortable doing both.

Do you play on just one of’s stations or both?

Just Dance UK

Outside of, who are your favourite DJ’s, bands or music artists and how have they influenced your style (if they have)?

As a DJ I am not influenced at all. I have my own style and I trust my own judgement so I don’t look to anyone for guidance, but the DJ who got me into the whole thing was Graham Gold and I will always be indebted to his inspiration as a dj. As for music- well there I do have a lot of influences, but they are from perhaps surprising sources: 80s electronica is a huge influence on how I hear music, and synth melody is the whole reason I gravitated towards trance. To list all the artists I love would be impossible but here are just a few: Duran Duran (number 1!), Japan, Human League, John Foxx, Vince Clark, Blondie, Kraftwerk, Abba (funny you might say but when it comes to melody these guys were the dons!), Gary Numan, Depeche Mode, Tears For Fears, Visage, Pet Shop Boys, Erasure, Ah-Ha. ETC ETC!!!!! Oh and Jan Hammer, Vangelis and the stuff Maurice Jarre scored when he got on the old synth! I LOVE synths! (I sit playing with soft synths programming them for hours).

What other interests do you have besides DJing/presenting on the radio?

My family (obviously), football (Arsenal and Charlton) – actually most sports apart from athletics and rugby union (boring), Classic literature, and I tutor maths and English! It’s varied. (I bloody love Springwatch – I could be a birdwatcher if I had the time!).

Favourite things?

My family (all of them, including direct and in-laws!) Trance (obviously): sport: classic literature: Films (probably the thing I love most as a hobby- I used to write film reviews). And I just love opera – and here is one that will surprise people – I love figure skating – and for those in the know I pick Medvedeva over Zagitova any day of the week!

Sum yourself up in a sentence?

Young at heart – Carpe Diem.

Your desert island discs?

Ok on the basis we are on radio two – I will go with 8 – in no particular order:

Joe Smooth – Promised Land

Duran Duran – The Chauffeur

Human League – Don’t you want me

Kraftwerk – Das Model

Blondie – Touched by your presence

Soul Sonic Force – Planet rock

Orbital – Out there somewhere

A Tribe Called Quest – I left my wallet in el segundo

Anything else?

Said it all for now – listen to the show and lots more will be revealed as we take the journey together!
