What motivated you to start DJing/presenting?
As a student in the 90’s, the rise of the “Big Beat” movement (The Chemical Brothers, Fatboy Slim, The Crystal Method, Death In Vegas etc) had a huge impact on this little indie kid. A total shift towards electronic music in all its forms followed, which eventually led to sporadic, and frankly terrible, DJing through the late 90s and early 2000s. Luckily, I got better (you can be the judge of that).
What styles do you play?
I play almost entirely jackin’ house, with the odd bit of soulful and disco stuff thrown in. What’s a genre anyway? If it gets the people moving, it’s getting played.
Do you mix or scratch or both? Or are you more of a presenter?
Some would say that I do none of the above. I’ve had many comments regarding my DJing such as:
“you’re better than I expected you to be”
“I didn’t enjoy it, but my mate says you’re a good DJ” etc
“Can you play something we can dance to?”
“I’ve heard worse DJs than you playing at big clubs” etc etc
Do you play on just one of danceradiouk.com’s stations or both?
Just the one – Dance UK. My wife won’t let me do anymore.
Outside of danceradiouk.com, who are your favourite DJ’s, bands or music artists and how have they influenced your style (if they have)?
The Chemical Brothers are still my no. 1 absolute favourites, but since getting into the jackin’ house stuff I’m massively influenced by the likes of J Paul Getto, Milty Evans, Demarkus Lewis, Angelo Ferreri, (this could be a long list….)
What other interests do you have besides DJing/presenting on the radio?
I’m also a producer in my own right, and I have a number of releases out on labels such as 18-09 Records, Rhythmic By Nature, Kinky Trax, and Disco Balls. I am now signed exclusively to Digital:Groove Records.
My family, friends, good music, good food, and good beer. I love watching a good game of rugby, too, especially the Six Nations.
Sum yourself up in a sentence?
If I say something that can be taken two ways, and one of them upsets you, I meant the other one.
Your desert island discs?
Rez by Underworld, Surface To Air by The Chemical Brothers, The Man With The Red Face by Laurent Garnier
Something about sticking in at school or some such, I don’t know.
